Library Research Skills for Math Graduate Students. Transform mathematics learning from “doing” to “thinking” American students are losing ground in the global mathematical environment. Mathematics can be the gatekeeper for many areas of advanced study. After reading the various pros and cons and studies completed on teaching math using manipulatives, I am still not completely sold on manipulatives as being the BEST method to teaching and learning math skills, but it is a growing trend in the education world and certainly has its benefits.

They see their responsibility in the mathematics classroom not so much as completing assigned tasks but as making sense of, and communicating about, mathematics. As a conclusion to this lesson the teacher should have several different objects that she has gathered for the students to add. In simplifying the task, the teacher then can identify problems in the student's understanding of the process rather than in the performance of the task. Finland, which already has one of the most successful education systems in the world, will be changing from a subject-based system to a topic-based system in hopes of better preparing its students for the real world.
