There are several points which need making clear in this remarkable passage. John of the Cross embarked upon their mystical journeys in the 16th century. According to the Zohar, a foundational text for kabbalistic thought, Torah study can proceed along four levels of interpretation ( exegesis ). [6] [7] These four levels are called pardes from their initial letters (PRDS Hebrew: פרדס‎‎, orchard). The former contributed a monumental work to the speculative Cabala in his "Shem 'Olam" (Everlasting Name); the latter became the father of modern Cabala criticism by his penetrating literary scrutiny of the Zohar., which in its different forms includes both the mystical and speculative sides.
