The first section provides a “General Overview” of Renaissance Individualism. He also understood the need to articulate a simple, attractive humanism, capable of being understood outside the academy. He noticed the relations between Hellenism and Judaism, studied the Cabbala, combated astrology, and composed an immortal work on the dignity of man.

If this is the grand vision, what are the more particular objectives that it translates into when considered as a guide to policy? Christianity, the desists contended, merely placed shackles on the mind and was not consonant with what they termed "natural religion," a universal religion that could be deduced from the "book of nature" and did not contain the provincialism of Christianity.

Wilson, Francis Crick, Jonas Salk, Steven Weinberg, Carolyn Porco, and many others—all members of the American Humanist Association, whose president in the 1980s was the late scientist and author Isaac Asimov. Enraged at this opposition, Pfefferkorn, in his "Handspiegel", attacked Reuchlin, in reply to which the latter composed the "Augenspiegel". Less successful has been that materialist-oriented movement, logical positivism, 6 which grew in part out of Mach's sensation-based philosophy and is associated with the work of Otto Neurath, 7 Rudolph Carnap, 8 and others of the Vienna Circle. 9 While not of much influence in continental Europe, where existentialism, phenomenology, and neo-Kantianism have come to dominate, logical positivism (or logical empiricism or positivism) has found fertile soil in the empirically oriented Anglo-Saxon countries, especially among behavioral social scientists. 10 Logical empiricism does not contain a doctrine about what reality is, but rather about how we should approach reality.
